People from all walks of life lashed out at Shobha De for making controversial remarks against the Indian athletes participating at the Rio Olympics. Writer Shobha De invited fresh controversy after she mocked Indian athletes participating in the Rio Olympics for failing to win any medals. De, who is known for making controversial remarks, tweeted on Monday night saying Indian athletes participating in Olympics were a ‘waste of money and opportunity.’ On Tuesday morning, unrepentant, she told News18, “I stand by my tweet. Players are entitled to their opinion, I was not referring to any particular player.”
De had tweeted on Monday, “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity.” “Only hope? Dependable Abhinav Bindra. Aim for gold, champion!” she added. De’s remarks came even as Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar scripted history by becoming the first Indian to make the cut for the individual vault finals in her debut Olympic Games after finishing 8th in the qualifying round in Rio de Janeiro. Star marksman Abhinav Bindra also narrowly missed a medal and the men’s hockey team slumped to a 1-2 defeat to Germany by conceding a goal with three seconds left in the match.
However, Shobha’s remarks did not go well as fans, sportsmen and people from all walks of life, who expressed their anger in reply to her tweets. Lashing out at De, former captain of the Indian Men’s Hockey team, Viren Rasquinha said, Abhinav Bindra also called out the unfairness of De’s comments.
