Mother’s Day History: Mother’s day is not celebrated from ancient times. Greeks used to celebrate this eve to honor the mother of the gods, Rhea. Earlier, Christians used to celebrate this festive occasion on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor the mother of Jesus Christ, Mary. Later it became like a trend to celebrate this day on religious basis. It was now not limited to wish god’s mother and included all mothers. This festival is given name Mothering Sunday. Due to lack of time, the English colonists who were settled in America stopped the trend while in year 1872; this eve was celebrated by Julia Ward Howe for mothers dedicated to peace. This day become a remarkable day of Mother’s Day history. Later, in year 1907, a Philadelphia school teacher, Anna M. Jarvis started a moment to set up a national Mother’s Day in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She took help from hundreds of legislators and business tycoons to make a special day to honor mothers. Her hard work did not go waste as in the year 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as a national holiday in honor of mothers. After that, this day became popular in other countries as well and people started celebrating the day as Mother’s Day. In most of country, second Sunday of month, May was decided to honor the mothers while other countries celebrate in other months as well. Other than USA, some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May every year.
