Under Water Volcano Found During Research

Underwater volcano

Under water volcano found during research: According to a research team of an international team of scientists has found asphalt volcanoes. These volcanoes were too deep in Pacific Ocean and are very old. Team was having many research scientists from several countries while the research was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). There was collaboration between scientists from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), University of California at Davis, University of Sydney and University of Rhode Island for the research work. Among all the volcanoes found undersea Ice Age volcanoes, largest on lies at depth of around 700 feet. This is too deep and not easy for scuba diving at such depth. Director of NSF’s Chemical Oceanography Program, Don Rice told that these volcanoes were away from sight of us due to such depth where it is not easy to reach for scuba divers.

Valentine credits Ed Keller: David Valentine is a lead author and a geoscientist at the UCSB. He told that these volcanoes are larger than a football fiend and as tall as a six story building. These massive features are made from asphalt. He watched with his other colleagues the volcanoes during a 2007 dive on the research submersible Alvin. David Valentine credited to Ed Keller who was an earth scientist at UCSB. David told that with guiding him and colleagues to the site. He told that Ed Keller had looked into the some of the bathymetry. Study was made in 1990s and some very unusual features. It was his research that David Valentine and his colleagues lead to take the Alvin into the research area in year 2007. Using the sub’s robotic arm, the researchers broke off samples and brought them to labs at UCSB and WHOI for testing. In 2009, Valentine and colleagues made two more dives to the area in Alvin. Detailed survey was conducted in the selected region using an autonomous underwater vehicle called Sentry which can take photos as it moves about nine feet above the ocean floor. Valentine told that when you ‘fly’ Sentry over the sea floor, one can see all of the cracking of the asphalt and flow features.

Petroleum and gases flows: There are several features which indicate towards lava flow due to which scientist referred them as volcanoes. Now all the textures are visible of a once-flowing liquid that has solidified in place. Research made by the scientists’ team has proved that these are not typical lava volcanoes. To determined the structure scientists used several techniques like a mass spectrometer, carbon dating, microscopic fossils, and comprehensive, two-dimensional gas chromatography and they found it is asphalt. These volcanoes were made from petroleum flowed from sea floor about 30000 to 40000 years back. According to scientists these volcanoes were source of methane which causes greenhouse effect. Largest two volcanoes are just about a distance of one kilometer having pits around them which are caused due to methane gas bubbling from the sub surface. Volcanoes were emitting a lot of petroleum as well natural gases which one can gets when there is petroleum seepage in the area. Researchers are wondering that may be this vast amount has caused damage to Ice Age becoming a dead zone.
