Husain accepts Qatar citizenship: Well known painter Maqbool Fida Husain has accepted the citizenship of Qatar and he is now in his new home in Qatar. 95 year old artist is well known for his paintings as well as for the controversies. He was living in Dubai since 2006 on self enforced exile. Son of MF Husain, Owasin Husain said that his father missed home in India terribly and has left Dubai for Qatar but he would not blame his father for accepting the nationality of Qatar as he had been a nomad all his life because of various reasons. MF Husain, himself has not made any statement on it and also there are no comments from Indian government whether they want their 95 year old talent back to their country or not but they want him back to country.

About MF Husain: Maqbool Fida Husain is well known as M F Husain and he was born on 17 September, 1915 and he is an artist of Indian origin who has produced a large collection of works over a career spanning seven decades. He was called “Picasso of India” by Forbes magazine. Husain became popular in late 1940s and his work was awarded at various levels whether it was in our own country of in Europe and USA. He was awarded with prestigious Padma Shree prize by the Government of India in year 1955. He got special invitation at the Sao Paulo Biennial along with Pablo Picasso in year 1971. He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in 1973 and Padma Vibhushan in 1991. He was also nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1986. Husain with his talent became the highest paid painter in India and his single canvases had fetched up to two million dollar at Christie’s auction. Supporter of Husain even said that he should be awarded with India’s highest award Bharat Ratan for his excellence. Husain’s Battle of Ganga and Jamuna: Mahabharata 12, a large diptych, from the Hindu epic, fetched $1.6 million, setting a world record at Christie’s South Asian Modern and Contemporary Art sale in year 2008. He has also worked over movies like “Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities” and “Gaja Gamini”.

Controversies: MF Husain has been in many controversies during his career and there are still 1250 cases pending against him all over India. He came into controversy with his work in 1990s because of their portrayal of Hindu deities in the nude or in an allegedly sexual manner. Paintings were created in year 1970 but did not become the big issue until 1996 till they were not printed in a monthly Hindi magazine, Vichar Mimansa which published article with headline “M.F. Husain: A Painter or Butcher” and in response eight criminal complaints were filed against him. In year 2004, Delhi High Court dismissed these complaints of “promoting enmity between different groups … by painting Hindu goddesses — Durga and Sarswati — in an uncharitable manner hurting the sentiments of Hindus”. The controversy was so serious that in 1998 Hussain’s house was attached by Hindu groups like Bajrang Dal and art works were vandalized. In year 2006, Husain was charged of hurting the sentiments of Hindu people by making painting of Hindu gods and goddesses. Many other cases were also filed against him for hurting the religious beliefs of people. In year 2006 and advertisement was published in India Today in February issue with title “Art For Mission Kashmir” and advertisement was containing painting of Mother India as a nude woman posed across a map of India with names of various states on various parts of body which also put him in controversy. He had threat of death and legal actions so he went into exile and now taken the citizenship of Qatar.
