Journey for last homage: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu who died on 17 January, 2010 will be given guard of honour and gun salute on his last journey on Tuesday before his body is handed over to a hospital for the medical research purpose. Jyoti Basu had pledged to donate his body for the medical research on 4 April 2003 at a function organized by Ganadarpan and Susrut Eye Foundation and had also donated his eyes. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) West Bengal Secretary Biman Bose told on Monday that body of Jyoti Basu will be taken out of Peace Haven of central Kolkata at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Basu’s last journey will navigate through Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Park Street and A.J.C. Bose Road in the central part of Kolkata and will reach the CPI-M’s state headquarters Muzaffar Ahmed Bhavan on Alimuddin Street around 8 a.m. Then the body will be kept for an hour in party office till 9 a.m. and all party members, central committee, state committee, district-level party cadres and state’s ruling left front will be allowed to pay their homage to Basu. The march will reach state secretariat Writer’s Building at 9:45 a.m. and will be there for the next 10 min after which body will be taken to state legislative assembly where it will be kept for five hours till 3 p.m. for the people and his follower to pay him last homage.
Dignitaries expected to pay homage: Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) West Bengal Secretary Biman Bose has requested to all state lest front ministers and Lok Sabha members from state to arrive in assembly to pay their respect to Jyoti Basu. It is expected that there will be many big political leaders and other foreigner leaders will come to pay their tributes to Jyoti Basu. Among expected leaders are United Progressive Alliance chair person Sonia Gandhi, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Lal Krishna Advani, BJP president Nitin Gadkari, Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav will come to pay their homage. Consul General of the People’s Republic of China already visited the party headquarters and placed a garland and written in condolence book: “Deepest condolence for the passing away of India’s greatest Communist and China’s great friend, Comrade Jyoti Basu.
Last journey & donation of body: The last journey is scheduled at 3 p.m. through Red Road and Cathedral Road and it will finally end at the SSKM Hospital on Harish Mukherjee Road where the body is to be donated. Before donating the body to the hospital authorities a gun salute will be given to Basu at Mohar Kunj which is nearby the hospital. A condolence book will be kept at the Alimuddin Street party office for the people where they can write their condolences for the former West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu.Share
