Burj Dubai: World’s highest building, Burj Dubai is ready to open for people. It is 818 meter i.e. 2,684 feet tall and situated on Shaikh Zayed Road. Burj Dubai is part of Downtown Burj Dubai which is constructed with a total budget of 20 billion USD. This super tall skyscraperis designed by architect Adrian Smith who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006. The construction of building started on September 21, 2004 with target to complete it in 2008 but due to some upgraded finish and later targeted to complete by September 2009. Emaar Properties has developed this big building of 200 floors out of which 160 are inhabitant. This building is multipurpose building with residential area, offices, hotel and many other facilities while other tall skyscrapers like Petrons towers in Kuala Lumpar, the Taipei or Wills Tower in Chicago are mainly used for only office and business purposes. Burj Dubai has total built up area of about 5.67 million square feet which includes 1.85 million square feet of residential area while over 300,000 square feet is utilized for the office space. Building has 1044 apartments and there 49 floors which will be used for offices. World’s fastest lift is used in the building which has a speed of 64 kilometer per hour and there are 57 such lifts which are used in the building.

Architecture and design of Burj Dubai: Hyder Consulting is legally the Design Consultant for the Burj Dubai. The tower was in real designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) which has designed many famous towers like Willis Tower in Chicago, World Trade Center in New York City and many other such remarkable towers. Emaar Properties decided to chose Hyder Consulting as their supervision consultant, engineer and architect of record for their big structure, frontage, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering capabilities. Hyder Consulting reengineered the structural, facades and MEP systems which can meet the requirements of contractors and local authority. Hyder Consulting was also given responsibility for the geotechnical design for Burj Dubai. The design architect Adrian Smith told that triple-lobed footprint of the building was inspired by the flower Hymenocallis. The tower is composed of three elements which are arranged around a central core. As the height of tower increase from the flat desert base, setback occurs at each element in upward spiraling pattern and the cross sectional area of tower keeps on decreasing as it goes higher towards the sky. At the top of tower the central core emerges and it is sculpted to form a finishing spire. English alphabet “Y” shaped floor plan maximizes views of Persian Gulf. The building is rotated by 129 degree from the original layout by the engineers during the design process to reduce the stress from the prevailing winds and to secure the building. At the highest point of the tower, it sways about 1.5 meter. The spire of tower is composed of more than 4000 tonnes of structural steel with central pinnacle pope weighing 350 tonnes which was constructed from inside of the building and then jackef to its full height of 143 meters using a strand jack system. The residential lobby consists of art work of 196 bronze and brass alloys which represents 196 counties of the world. To withstand the extreme summer temperature cladding system is designed at exterior which consists of about 142,000 square meters of reflective glazing and aluminum and textured stainless steel spandrel panels with vertical tubular fins. More than 26,000 glass panels are used in the exterior cladding of the tower for which about 300 cladding specialists were hired from China. The graphic design work for Burj Dubai was given to Dubai based Brash Brands who was also given responsibility for the design of global launch events, communications, and visitors centers.

Facilities in Burj Dubai: Burj Dubai is full of various kinds of facilities which are attracting the people from worldwide and rates of the office and residential are going very high. There are various amenities like shopping, hotels, office space, and residences, entertainment in the Burj Dubai. To wash the windows of all 160 floors of habitable zone there are horizontal track which are installed on the exterior of the tower at three different levels 40, 73 and 109 with each track holding bucket machine of capacity 1.5 tonne which moves horizontally and then vertically using the cables while above floor 109, 27 traditional cradles from davits are used. Etisalat and du have provided the middles east’s fastest broadband connectivity for the occupants of all 160 story tower. One of the main attractions in the building is its Observation Deck which is also called “At The Top” on 124th floor of the tower and its height from the ground level is 442 metres from where one can have a real experience with the special telescopes set on the floor. At the deck there is a boutique from where merchandise items and souvenirs can be purchased. The Observation Deck is highest level for the public visitors and there are also a number of sky lobbies at the upper part of the building on floor 123, 76 and 43 which are made for the residents and office workers but can also be utilized by guests as a meet and greet place. The sky lobbies have various facilities like indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a recreation room for different kind of events. On floor 122, there is world’s highest restaurant “Atmosphere” with fine dining. Floor 108 is last residential floor and above that are offices up to 154th floor with deck at 124th storey and lobby at 123rd floor in between the office floors. Four stories of the Burj Dubai is occupied by club for health and recreational activities where priority is given to the residents of tower but public can also take advantage of the services available like spa facility, two indoor and outdoor pools and two gymnasiums. This building is unique in itself with various facilities and comforts which people can enjoy from January 4, 2010.
