Indian cricket team reached many milestones in year 2009 with excellent performance of many of his player. Some of top performers of the team are given below who made Indian team reach big heights in the year.
Virender Sehwag: Virender Sehwag played superb and proved as devil for all bowlers. His strike rate reached above 80 and in one day over 100. He also became the wisdom leading player of the year with his performance. He hit fastest 250 runs against Sri Lanka in third test match and in his inning of 293 runs he hit 40 fours and seven sixes entertaining the audience present. He played six test matches in year and scored 631 runs with the average of 70.11 while in one day matches he scored 810 runs in 20 matches with highest of 146 runs. He also played a very fast inning against New Zealand at Hamilton of 125 runs at just 74 balls with the help of 14 fours and 4 sixes. He did extremely well in the year with his bat and entertained the spectators across the world with his game.
Gautam Gambhir: Gautam Gambhir won the ICC test player award with his performance in test matches. He continued his performance of last year and attracted the attentions of spectators from worldwide cricket world. He played five test matches in the year hitting 4 centuries and scoring 727 runs with an average of 90.87. He showed his ability on home grounds as well as outside the country. He also played well in one day international scoring 848 in 27 matches with highest of unbeaten 150 runs. He also shown his game at the time when Indian team needed such inning and he also saved match for the team. He proved himself in test matches as well as one day international cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar: Tendulkar completed his 20 years of years of international cricket this year but still he is hungry for more runs and success. In the year he showed his hunger for the run in one day as well as test cricket. He played six test matches in the year against Sri Lanka and New Zealand in which he hit two centuries and three fifties and made 541 runs with highest of 160 runs and an average of 67.62. He is just 30 runs short to reach 13,000 runs in test cricket while he has completed his 30,000 runs in the international cricket with over 17,000 runs in one day internationals. He played big innings in one day hitting three centuries and two of them are big ones. He made 163 runs of just 133 balls against New Zealand at Christchurch with 16 fours and 5 sixes while he scored 175 off 141 against Australia at Hyderabad with 19 fours and 4 sixes which made India win both the matches. He is at age of 36 but he is still ambitious and wants to help the Indian team to win upcoming world cup in year 2011.
Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh: Rahul Dravid well known as ‘The Wall’ really proved to be a wall in year 2009 in test cricket and it was not easy for the bowlers to take his wicket while he was limited in one day cricket. He is at age 36 but still consistent in test career and he reached at 11,000 runs in tests and became fifth player in the world to do so. He played six test matches in the year and scored 747 run with highest of 177 runs with two hundreds. Yuvraj Singh showed good game in this year in one day cricket with his strike rate going to about 90. He played match winning innings for the Indian team too and one of the big highlight inning was of 131 runs against West Indies off 102 balls with the help of 10 fours and 7 sixes at Kingston which lead Indian team a victory with 20 runs.
MS Dhoni and VVS Laxman: Indian skipper MS Dhoni was ICC One-Day Player of the Year 2008 and he became again the ICC One Day player of the year 2009 as well because of his excellent game. Dhoni as a successful captain led Indian team to seven victories in ten Tests. In his captainship Indian team reached at first rank in ICC ranking in tests and he also made Indian team win many ODI series. He was excellent whole year with bat as well as wicket keeper behind the wicket. He played five test matches in the year scoring 369 run with two centuries and two fifities. He played a memorable inning of 124 runs off 107 runs against Australia at Nagpur with 9 fours and 3 sixes which led Indian team a victory of 99 run. VVS Laxman was effective in test cricket as in past too and he shown his consistency in test cricket this year as well with making 471 runs with one hundred and five half centuries. He played a vital role in saving second test match against New Zealand at Napier scoring 76 and 124 runs not out. He is about to reach a mark of 7000 runs in his test cricket.
Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh: Zaheer Khan became third Indian fast bowler to take 200 wickets in test cricket after Kapil Dev and Javagal Srinath. He has shown his excellent performance with bowling in test cricket taking 23 wickets in the 6 test matches with best of 5 for 65 runs. Indian selectors tried also new pace bowlers but still Zaheer Khan is performing his role well in the team. He has good ability to swing the ball as well as ideal temperament in him. Indian team was in doubt about finding the spin bowler like Anil Kumble after his retirement and Indian team has got Harbhajan Singh who has proved to be top spinner for Indian team at present. In the year 2009 he played crucial role in Indian victories in all three test match taking 29 wickets to his name in the six test matches played in the year against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. He has till now taken 343 wickets in 80 test matches which is enough to clear the view that how effective he is with his bowling attack. He also took five wickets against Sri Lanka at Colombo in this year. Any new spinner failed to take his place in the team and after 12 years of his career he is still at his place fixed in the Indian international cricket team with his excellent performance and good economy rate.Share
