IIT Bombay teachers go on strike: IIT-Bombay professor went on strike on Monday August 24, 2009. There were almost 200 professors of IIT-Bombay went on mass leave on Monday. They went on leave because they demanding better pay. According to them the government scientist paid more than them although they worked equal to them. We worked very hard on our students and help them as much as possible. According to secretary of faculty forum IIT-B Somya Mukherjee, IIT professors are loosing near about 23 lakh in their career as compared to government scientist and other officials of similar rank. This means that they did not get the salary that they deserve. The other reason of demanding high pay outs is to attract faculties towards IIT. He also added that as government is going to set up near about 8000 IIT’s across the country and for those it needs IIT Professors and high pay outs may attract professors towards IIT’s of country.

Demanding Honor and Prestige: IIT professors also worked hard and give their best to their students and in their research. But they do not get the same honor or respect which an Indian government scientist or other officials get. According to Somya Mukherjee they are also giving their best and in IIT we also teach and research like any other college or university do. So we also deserve the same honor and prestige that others got and also the salary equal to them. We are not demanding something which is not fair, we just demanding our right as this is our right to get the equal pay outs and we are demanding just that. This is not irrelevant demand of IIT-B. They demanded that their position and pay outs must be equal to the government officials.

Gowardhan Mehta report against government recommendation: Before this strike, a report was also sent to government against their some irrelevant conditions. This report is submitted by Gowardhan Mehta in February, 2009. He reported against recommendation advised by government. According to him some conditions are not favorable to professors. According to the report the professors who want to be in IIT must have experience of three years after PH.D. But they said it is very unlikely to join the IIT after PH.D as after this if once they got job some where else, then it is very difficult or say impossible to come to IIT for joining as according to government one must has three years experience. Then how can it possible that he left the job and join IIT. No, it’s not right. No response is getting from government and also no further processing so IIT-B decided to go on mass leave to get what they demand from the Indian government.
